THE ALCHEMIST CAFE || A Whimsical Fusion of Fantasy and Reality in Hong Kong

Can a restaurant be both an intimate bistro and a gateway to fantasy?

At The Alchemist Cafe, designed by Minus Workshop, this question finds its answer in a space that masterfully blends nostalgia, whimsy, and sophistication. Located in Kowloon Bay’s Telford Plaza, this newly opened bistro offers diners a multidimensional journey of discovery—where the charm of Hong Kong’s traditional neighbourhood cafes meets the eccentricity of an alchemist’s imagination.

The dining hall’s dramatic chandelier and lush greenery create an atmosphere of whimsy and sophistication.

At first glance, guests are drawn to the transparency of the bistro's entrance, where a hand-printed Fortuny Moda floor lamp illuminates a full-height window adorned with delicate signage. The scene hints at the enchanting interiors that lie beyond, sparking curiosity and a sense of anticipation. Upon stepping inside, the dining hall’s vaulted windows and a striking chandelier with fluid, wavy forms create an immediate sense of grandeur. These elements work harmoniously with a lively open kitchen at the far end, where deep marble counters and bustling activity infuse the space with energy and warmth.

Designed as a series of interconnected zones, the cafe unfolds like a novel, each chapter revealing its own story. The library section, for instance, exudes an aura of old-world elegance. Its plaid mirrored ceiling reflects the glimmer of Gioielli wall sconces, while rows of books soften the grandeur of the built-in bookshelves. This space nods to the brand’s commitment to preserving the cultural tradition of book crossing, inviting diners to linger and explore.

A mirrored ceiling amplifies the grandeur of the library-inspired space, complete with books and bespoke lighting.

Another notable feature is the forest-green bar corner, evocative of a lush conservatory. With its semi-hexagonal fluted exterior and dim lighting, the bar acts as a focal point and a sanctuary for those seeking an intimate setting. Here, The Alchemist embodies its ethos—a “morning coffee, evening wine” destination that offers distinct experiences throughout the day.

A forest green hued corner space with a wrap-around mirror and moss picturescape leads to the energetic bar corner, bringing in the quality of a lush conservatory.

Beyond aesthetics, every element in The Alchemist is bespoke, from handcrafted furniture to custom-designed lighting by Tommy Li of Lightitude HK Limited. Drawing inspiration from art, travel, and imagination, designer Kevin Kam’s vision culminates in a bistro that feels experimental and timeless. At its core lies a duality—one that juxtaposes the familiar warmth of a neighbourhood cafe with the unexpected whimsy of a fairytale.

This 4,530-square-foot space isn’t just a dining destination; it’s a world waiting to be discovered. From the moss-framed mirrors to the firefly-like lighting sequences, every corner invites guests to immerse themselves in a narrative where the mundane transforms into the extraordinary. The Alchemist Cafe isn’t merely a place to eat—it’s a space where stories are written, told, and experienced.

Every detail is meticulously selected to craft an immersive old-world experience.
