LEO || Intricate Craftsmanship and Contemporary Flair at East Amsterdam's Newest Cafe and Bar
Stepping into LEO, the latest addition to the Goudvisch Family of bars feels like entering a sanctuary where tradition meets modern elegance.
Nestled in East Amsterdam's bustling Beukenplein, this café, bar, and restaurant encapsulate the essence of a traditional 'bruin café' with contemporary twists, masterfully executed by Studio Modijefsky.
A Symphony of Materials and Textures
Upon entering LEO, one is immediately drawn to the rich material palette and intricate details that define the space. The walls are clad in walnut-coloured wood, providing a warm and inviting backdrop. This is elegantly complemented by oak furniture, which adds a layer of sophistication to the ambiance. The design draws inspiration from the building's architecture, featuring chamfered details that lend a distinct character to the interior.
One cannot overlook the impressive bar, a true centerpiece formed from highly textured burgundy and white marble, accented with aged brass and dark oak wood. The bar stands on a raised floor, commanding attention with its base of black and white terrazzo. This focal point invites guests on a sensory journey through a palette enriched with handmade details, showcasing the craftsmanship that Studio Modijefsky is known for.
The Allure of Pojagi Plum
A standout element in LEO's design is the integration of Pojagi, a traditional Korean textile art form. The Pojagi plum curtains, with their eye-catching patchwork texture, introduce a distinct flair and elegance. The plum hue is woven throughout the space, uniting the curtains, leather upholstery, and marble elements, creating a cohesive and deeply engaging design palette.
Craftsmanship and Curated Details
As guests explore LEO, they encounter meticulously curated details that elevate the experience. From the intricate wooden carvings to the bespoke lighting fixtures, every element is thoughtfully designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia while embracing contemporary flair. The Goudvisch logo, inlaid in marble within the wooden light ornaments, emphasizes the commitment to craftsmanship that is a hallmark of the Goudvisch Family.
The lighting throughout LEO is a testament to traditional techniques, with light spheres made from etched and cut glass illuminating the space. These finely crafted elements cast playful light effects, enhancing the intimate and inviting atmosphere.
Mezzanine Moments and Outdoor Sanctuary
The mezzanine level offers a retreat highlighted by vintage-style lamps with finely cut glass, casting enchanting light effects across the mirrored wall and bench below. This intimate setting, filled with custom wooden furnishings and a select range of artwork, creates a captivating ambiance that invites guests to linger and take in the beauty of their surroundings. From here, they can overlook the marbled spheres hanging above the bustling café floor.
Outside, a charming terrace seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor elements. Parasols, ambient lighting, and wooden windscreens combine to create a serene environment where guests can unwind and connect with the neighbourhood, enhancing the overall experience of LEO.
Capturing the Essence of Amsterdam
LEO captures the essence of Amsterdam's rich cultural mosaic by seamlessly integrating traditional elements with modern sensibilities. This establishment stands as a testament to the city's enduring spirit, where hospitality meets design excellence. LEO is not just a café, bar, and restaurant; it is an experience, a journey through time and design, where every detail tells a story of tradition and innovation.
