Embracing Nature’s Design: The Olympic Spa Hotel’s Eco-Sensitive Expansion in Italy’s Val di Fassa
Nestled amidst the pristine beauty of the Dolomites, the Olympic Spa Hotel in Vigo di Fassa has long been a haven for those seeking to blend comfort and nature.
The recent expansion spearheaded by architectural firm NOA—Network of Architecture—is a masterstroke that respects and enhances the natural beauty of the Alpine meadow it occupies. The new extension is artfully woven into the landscape, allowing guests to experience a unique bond with nature while comfortably luxuriating in state-of-the-art facilities.
The Power of Sustainable Design
NOA’s vision for the Olympic Spa Hotel was a 'mimetic' design model that encourages sustainable growth while leaving a minimal footprint on the surrounding terrain. The introduction of an annex and a sauna provides more space without disrupting the harmony with the landscape. The new rooms, elegantly arrayed along a descending slope, are interconnected by an underground passageway, maintaining the integrity of the scenic view.
Architectural Harmony in The New Rooms
The new building, housing ten rooms and a gym, mirrors the contours of the Dolomites. The structure’s high peaks and low valleys are designed to mimic the surrounding mountains, creating a cohesive visual experience for guests. The grey-hued exteriors blend seamlessly with the local Dolomite rock, epitomizing the principles of mimetic design.
A Genuine Touch of Nature
The rooms of the extension, partially submerged within the landscape, offer floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious terraces, providing an immersive, panoramic view of the alpine scenery. Each room encapsulates elements of the Ladin culture, named in the local language, with themes around forest and water. The terraces and interior patios allow for unique experiences—watching the snowfall, gazing at stars, or simply taking in the peaceful surroundings.
Wellness in the Wild: A Treetop Sauna
Away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, the separate wooden sauna, reachable by an aerial path, provides an elevated, intimate experience. It is designed to promote profound contact with nature, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the forest. The sauna's build, encompassing black wax-treated spruce and external larch cladding, ensures its unobtrusive presence in the forest.
Sustainable Materials and Thoughtful Design
The conscious use of reinforced concrete and a partial green roof minimizes environmental impact. The annex’s furnishings pay homage to Alpine tradition with customized oak furniture and soft, nature-inspired fabrics. This eco-sensitive approach enhances the overall aesthetic while also serving the hotel's green initiative.
Looking Towards a Green Future
The Olympic Spa Hotel envisions further development rooted in sustainability and respect for the environment. The plan includes the addition of more guesthouses and a wellness area and a revamp of the central building. All new additions will follow the same 'mimetic' approach, maintaining harmony with the Dolomite landscape.
