KIMPTON LAS MERCEDES HOTEL || A Historic Retreat in Santo Domingo’s UNESCO Colonial City

In the heart of Santo Domingo’s Colonial City, time moves at its own rhythm—unhurried, measured in the flicker of lantern light against centuries-old facades and the hush of courtyard fountains.
The Kimpton Las Mercedes Hotel, nestled in the heart of Santo Domingo’s Colonial City—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—proves that thoughtful restoration can breathe new life into history. Designed by Moneo Brock Architects, this boutique property seamlessly integrates the past with the present, offering a refined retreat that respects the essence of the 16th-century district while embracing contemporary luxury.
Kimpton Las Mercedes Hotel maintains the charm of its colonial architecture while introducing a new era of hospitality.
At first glance, the hotel’s façade remains true to its colonial roots, with meticulously preserved wrought-iron balconies and warm wooden shutters that recall the building’s historic character. Yet, step inside, and a world of architectural ingenuity unfolds. A lush central courtyard, shaded by towering native trees and encircled by original brick archways, serves as the heart of the property—an oasis that bridges nature, history, and hospitality.
The hotel’s central courtyard immerses guests in nature, seamlessly blending heritage with tranquillity.
Traditional brick archways frame a serene courtyard, preserving the essence of Santo Domingo’s colonial past.
Moneo Brock’s vision extends beyond aesthetic preservation; the project reinterprets traditional colonial elements with a modern sensibility. The introduction of new courtyards, elevated walkways, and sustainable materials ensures the hotel harmonizes with the urban fabric without imposing on its historic scale. Soft peach-hued walls and handcrafted wooden details exude warmth, while travertine floors and ceramic finishes lend a grounded, organic appeal. Every design choice echoes respect for local craftsmanship and sustainability, with natural cross-ventilation and abundant greenery reinforcing the hotel’s connection to the tropical environment.
The hotel’s intimate outdoor dining spaces invite guests to enjoy the historic ambiance under lush greenery.
Each of the 130 guest rooms offers a unique dialogue between old and new. Exposed stone walls and traditional wooden beams honour the past, while minimalist furnishings and locally crafted ceramics infuse a contemporary elegance. Private balconies and interior terraces invite guests to engage with their surroundings, offering serene views of the verdant courtyards. Some suites even boast secluded jacuzzis—an intimate retreat amid centuries-old history.
Modern guestrooms pay homage to history with exposed stone walls and handcrafted wooden details.
Beyond its accommodations, Kimpton Las Mercedes caters to leisure and business travellers with refined amenities. A rooftop solarium and infinity pool provide sweeping views of the Colonial City and the Caribbean beyond, while event spaces—bathed in natural light and framed by tropical greenery—offer an unparalleled setting for gatherings. The hotel’s culinary offerings celebrate the flavours of the Dominican Republic, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and a farm-to-table ethos.
The rooftop infinity pool offer panoramic views of the Colonial City, redefining urban relaxation.
What truly sets Kimpton Las Mercedes apart is its role in the broader revitalization of Santo Domingo’s historic center. As part of an ambitious urban renewal initiative, the hotel contributes to a vision of a more walkable, green, and culturally vibrant district. Its design preserves architectural heritage and fosters a renewed appreciation for the Colonial City’s rich history and evolving identity.
In a world where luxury often leans towards the ephemeral, Kimpton Las Mercedes is a testament to the enduring beauty of thoughtful preservation. Here, guests don’t just stay in a hotel—they become part of a living, breathing narrative that spans centuries.
