From celebrations to casual drinks after work, the captivating Bardem in the heart of Helsinki is designed for socializing and great conversation.

Created by Hans Välimäki and Arto Rastas, the restauranteur behind trendy tapa bistro Penélope, Bardem was designed to be a refreshingly new take on modern bars to add to the vibrant bar scene of downtown Helsinki. Local design studio, Fyra, who also designed the Penélope project, was tasked with creating a distinct interior for Bardem based on the visual identity created by branding studio Kallan & Co.

One of Fyra’s first challenges was to convert a two-storey space in the heart of Helsinki from a store into an adequately equipped restaurant bar. Located in a prime location with plenty of office buildings in the area, Bardem is a classy yet approachable post-work destination for impromptu social gatherings. A rich and deep colour palette combined with dimly-lit ambiance creates an evocative and mysterious allure reminiscent of a speakeasy - an immersive setting that is sure to bring patrons closer to one another.

The interior design concept was devised to have the main seating area surrounding a large, central bar that features an impressive collection of bottles lining the back wall. The bar acts as the centerpiece of the space, grabbing the attention of patrons upon their arrival. To make sure the featured bar stands out within the space, wood panels with a bight, pale honey finish wraps around the subtle curves of the bar to create a stark contrast against the dark background.

A curtain-like navy backdrop with a velvet finish adds a hint of vintage theatre charm, while deep, upholstered furniture invites guests to sink in and relax. The laidback setting allows guests to escape from their hectic life of the outside world just beyond the walls. The dim lighting is also a way to provide protection from prying eyes, giving guests peace of mind to unwind and relax.

The unique interior or Bardem is a harmonious combination of the old and the new. To create an approachable destination that can also appeal to the younger crowd, the design team skillfully injected a touch of playfulness to the brand with a series of fun window illustrations. The classy yet fun vibe is an encouragement for guests to revisit often, and not just on special occasions.
