CONO DI LUCE || LODES and Renowned Designer Ron Arad Push Boundaries with Printed Circuit Board in New Lighting Design
Italian lighting company Lodes has joined forces with renowned artist, architect, and designer Ron Arad to create their latest product - the Cono di Luce.
The lamp is the result of an exciting collaboration between two visionaries who share a passion for breaking the boundaries of design and creating something truly unique.
During the design process, Lodes challenged Arad to use borosilicate glass, which led to the creation of a slender cone shape with a light source on top - hence its name Cono di Luce, which translates to ‘cone of light’. A continuous dialogue and exchange of ideas between the two resulted in an innovative use of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) to create the mesmerizing pattern that forms the lamp's graphic motif.
Lodes' technical expertise, combined with Arad's intuitive design response to the brief, resulted in a technical feat that offers various functionalities. The design is characterized by a transparent Pyrex cone that houses a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) inside a frame, providing structural support for the lamp. The PCB interior and frame are the result of a 33-step process that involves several layers of fibreglass and copper to house the LED chip electric circuits, which by nature have both translucent and opaque areas.
The frame consists of a white rigid PCB that performs three functions: refracting light so that the luminous effect of the lamp can be uniform, connecting electric circuits that give power to the LEDs and finally, acting as a mechanical suspension to the product itself. The lamp is available in a pendant version and three finishes: red, grey, and gold, with the option to customize the frame.
What makes the Cono di Luce so intriguing is its deceptively simple design. When turned on, the product reveals its full decorative capacity showcasing an optical item made of light, shadows, and superimpositions. It is a powerful lamp that offers luminosity and efficiency, suitable for a range of users and environments.
This collaboration between Arad's creative vision and Lodes' ability to master and manage technology showcases the possibilities when great minds come together. The Cono di Luce is a testament to how something old can be made new again, and how a PCB can be used in innovative ways that we never thought possible before.
