AMPERE COLLECTION || Pendant and Wall Light Design by Jonathan Coles Lighting Inspired by Power Line Insulators
Imaginative lighting design can take your home or commercial space to a whole new level.
This is what we thought when we saw the new Ampere Collection from Jonathan Coles Lighting. The spin-off designs were born out of Jonathan Coles Lighting’s chandelier installation in each of the four towers of the newly restored Battersea Power Station.
Asked to reference power generation from the dials to the cables and powerlines, the designer created an installation consisting of 200 lights hung in 30-metre towers and made to appear as if the lights were sea organisms swimming down towards the viewer.
“I liked the idea of repurposing a form or material that would never normally make its way into a decorative setting. The bowls are made by pressing glass to make the concentric ribs to stop the power from arcing to the other side of the line,” Coles explains.
The Ampere Pendant and Ampere Wall Light pay tribute to the impressive Battersea Power Station installation. Both designs include elements of the original installation and allude to the shallow green bowl-like form of powerline insulators. The newly imagined lights cast a scattering of halo-like rings through layers of delicate mouth-blown recycled glass.
We can imagine how the soothing blue-green rings could establish an ethereal atmosphere at home and in the office. Its unique background story also provides an interesting conversation starter for your guests. Wouldn’t you agree?
You can find the Ampere Collection at All Square Lighting. The wall light is priced at £534, and the pendant is £558.
