I recall wearing my first kimono when I lived in Japan during my university years.

My landlord lady at the time had carefully prepared the different components of what some would refer to as a ‘summer Kimono’ on the tatami flooring of the living room. It was a unique cultural experience to wear traditional Japanese clothing, and since it was during the sweltering summer months where it got as hot as 42 degrees in Osaka, I was wearing a Yukata (summer Kimono). A Yukata is a much lighter and less intricate version of the Kimono, but nonetheless, it was still challenging to maneuver in the traditional wear.

I’ve always been in awe of the intricacies of traditional Kimono wear, the detailed designs and luxurious fabrics are just one of the many reasons why you should wear a Kimono at least once in your lifetime.

If you plan on visiting Japan in the upcoming months, you could get the full experience with a photoshoot with INKIMONO, a traditional Kimono and portrait studio based in Asakusa. As part of the experience, you’ll get professional kimono styling, a lesson on the kimono, and a portrait photoshoot. I wish I had captured the moment when I was wearing my Yukata so that I could refer to these memories more than a decade later.

If you’re bringing your little ones to Japan, just imagine how fun it would be to refer to these photos when they’re all grown up!
