THE BUTCHER'S APARTMENT || A Masterpiece of Subtle Austerity and Material Elegance
Tucked within the heart of Prague, The Butcher's Apartment pays homage to its building's functionalist roots and the history of the butchery trade.
Designed by Iva Hájková Studio, this 127 m² residential space artfully intertwines its industrial heritage with a distinctly masculine aesthetic, creating a living environment that feels both sophisticated and grounded.
The design language draws inspiration from the essence of butchery—its practicality, precision, and appreciation for materials. This vision manifests in the use of premium natural elements, including marble, wood, and terrazzo, each selected for its texture and innate beauty. The palette harmonizes with the apartment owner's modern art collection, accentuated by subtle hues and rich contrasts that echo the vivid tones of spices and condiments.
Upon entering, the interplay of stone and dark wood immediately establishes a sense of warmth and refinement. The light oak flooring, laid in a herringbone pattern, radiates brightness throughout, its bleached tones a nod to modernity while respecting the space's historical origins. Chrome and stainless steel accents weave through the design, a soft homage to the knives and metal counters of traditional butchery.
The kitchen is a tactile centrepiece, with terrazzo surfacing that balances practicality and visual intrigue. Custom cabinetry crafted from lacquered and wood veneer further underscores the commitment to craftsmanship. Subtle elements in lighting, such as fixtures resembling sausage links, introduce playful, conceptual layers, enhancing the narrative without overwhelming the minimalistic charm.
Each room tells a unique story yet maintains cohesion by consistently applying materials and tones. In the bedroom, the deep reds of the headboard and textiles suggest paprika and pepper, while the thoughtful design of the lighting mimics hanging meat, adding a whimsical yet elegant touch. Meanwhile, the bathroom’s colour scheme takes inspiration from condiments like mustard and horseradish, with marble cladding evoking the intricate marbling of fine cuts of meat.
The living and dining areas are imbued with subtle contrasts—sleek metal furniture frames, natural wood textures, and splashes of spice-inspired hues. A polished stainless steel bookcase, custom-designed by the studio, anchors the space, blending utilitarianism with artistry. Above the dining table, the Lampe de Marseille light fixture from NEMO Lighting adds a sculptural focal point, casting a warm glow that enhances the ambiance.
With meticulous attention to detail and materiality, The Butcher's Apartment embodies a profound respect for its cultural and architectural context. The result is a home that reflects the client's personal story and celebrates the history and craft of its surroundings—a refined sanctuary where design and narrative converge seamlessly.
