EMBRACING TRADITION || Seiki Design Studio Revives Japanese Craftsmanship
In a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, Seiki Design Studio introduces two exquisite collections that reimagine daily items into masterpieces of art and functionality.
Through collaborations with Tsuyama Furniture and Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi, these collections elevate everyday tasks and revive the rich heritage of Japanese craftsmanship.
Rediscovering Hinoki and Urushi
Hinoki, a cypress native to Japan, has long been revered for its durability, fine grain, and aromatic properties. Historically used in temples, shrines, and traditional crafts, its prominence waned with modernization. Similarly, urushi, the ancient art of Japanese lacquer, has seen a decline. Seiki Design Studio's collections revive these materials, reintroducing their unparalleled qualities to contemporary homes.
Hinoki Kitchen Tools Collection
The Hinoki kitchen tools collection, crafted in collaboration with Tsuyama Furniture, showcases Japanese cypress's natural beauty and functional excellence. The Obon Tray, carved from a single piece of Hinoki, is perfect for serving tea or displaying fruits. The knife stand is a minimalist yet sophisticated piece, which appears as three wooden pieces joined together, but the gentle curves add a playful touch. Finally, the coffee dripper designed for conical filters combines the thickness of Hinoki with sleek lines, elevating your everyday coffee brewing ritual. When you have perfected the brew, you can place it on the Trivet, whose design is inspired by the traditional trivet, with circles extending in three directions.
Urushi Collection
In collaboration with Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi, Seiki Design Studio presents the Urushi collection, which infuses traditional Japanese lacquer techniques into modern living. This collection not only brings aesthetic beauty but also integrates the practical benefits of urushi, which is known for its durability and antibacterial properties.
The TW Pendant light could be the new centrepiece over your kitchen table, with its soft texture of urushi lacquer and gentle light emanating from its LED surface. The TK Tray, made of handcrafted wooden planks, is shaped like a blossoming flower and can be used for fruits and snacks, although we wouldn’t mind having this elegant piece in our entryway for keys and jewelry items.
For plant parents looking for a functional home for their leafy friends, the TK Pot incorporated the antibacterial properties of lacquer. Produced by combining boards of Japanese cypress, the pot is characterized by a solid weight and a floating feeling that seems to contradict the weight, fitting in both Japanese and Western spaces.
Modern Living with Ancient Craft
Both collections bring aesthetic beauty and integrate the practical benefits of Hinoki and urushi. The antibacterial properties of urushi, combined with the robust nature of Hinoki, ensure these tools are as functional as they are beautiful.
Sustainability and Heritage
Seiki Design Studio’s initiative extends beyond aesthetics. By reviving the use of Hinoki and urushi, they address the environmental issues arising from the decline of these materials. These collections promote sustainable practices, highlight the importance of preserving traditional crafts in a modern context, and celebrate Japanese heritage with their timeless beauty in daily life.
