AIR SQUARE || This Transportable Modular Design Venue Can Activate Underused Urban Spaces Anywhere
AIR SQUARE is a transportable venue that activates underused urban spaces by bringing them purpose and vibrant public life.
It responds to the need to alleviate climate change issues by tackling overexposed heat islands and the lack of green and livable public spaces. The upper ring is designed as a large shading system that mitigates, cools, and delivers refuge from the heat. At night it provides illumination to dark and unsafe urban corners.
The addition of this transportable venue to different locations around the world shows the cities how it’s possible to improve the living environment, adapt to climate change, build a resilient green city, and rethink how we use city infrastructure.
The open design ensures barrier-free access, making it approaching and inviting for the public and integrated with the city’s rhythm and flow. With its modular design made of CNC cut plywood planks with vertical legs and horizontal benches, the structure minimizes waste and is easy to assemble. The circular design also makes it a suitable spot for public functions, performances, farmers’ markets, or on its ‘off days’, as public furniture where the public could gather and enjoy the breeze flowing through.
During the dark hours when it’s not shading its neighbours from the sun, AIR SQUARE becomes a light diffuser, illuminating hidden parts of the city that often feel unsafe to walk through.
Whether day or night, AIR SQUARE offers a space for the community to gather and celebrate.
