Passengers may also get off along the way to experience the varied landscapes of each area, including cityscapes and mountain views.
The Majestic Alishan Terrain
Alishan is located in southern Taiwan, near Chiayi, and is composed of 18 towering peaks—an offshoot of the Yushan (Jade Mountain) Range. Thanks to the newly extended Central Cross-Island Highway, Alishan and Yushan scenic areas are now easier to visit. At an altitude of 2,216 meters, the Alishan National Scenic Area is enveloped by mountains and offers cool, comfortable weather year-round. Known for its “Five Wonders”—the sunrise, sea of clouds, sunset glow, forests, and mountain railway—Alishan’s natural splendour draws visitors from around the world. Indigenous Tsou culture adds to Alishan’s appeal, enriching the experience with its distinct traditions.
The Famous Alishan Sacred Trees
Alishan’s towering sacred trees are a major attraction. The original Alishan Sacred Tree, a 3,000-year-old Taiwan red cypress, stood as one of Taiwan’s most ancient and revered trees until it fell during a typhoon in 1997. However, the “Sacred Tree Family”—nearby ancient trees—continues to carry on this legacy, embodying both history and mystery for every visitor.
Alishan’s Botanical Richness and Seasonal Blossoms
Alishan’s diverse plant life makes it a paradise for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Spanning Taiwan’s hot, warm, and temperate forest zones, Alishan is globally renowned for its lush cypress population. The forest trails feature a mix of Taiwan red cypress, hinoki, Taiwan fir, hemlock, and Chinese mountain pine, known as the “Five Trees of Alishan.” The cherry blossoms burst into bloom throughout March and April, with Yoshino, double-flowered, and wild cherry trees blanketing the mountainside in a vibrant display. Wildflowers, such as rhododendrons, tree peonies, and foxgloves, also contribute to this stunning landscape. For an incredibly unique experience, don’t miss the Taiwan single-leaf orchid conservation area, home to a delicate yet extraordinary native plant.
Experience Tsou Indigenous Culture
Beyond its natural beauty, Alishan offers a rich cultural landscape, including museums, historic train exhibits, and a close look at the heritage of the Tsou people, Taiwan’s indigenous community. Every February, the Tsou host the “Mayasvi (War Festival),” preserving traditional rituals that give visitors a glimpse into a unique cultural celebration. Traditional craftsmanship in leather, rattan, and woodcarving showcases the Tsou people’s artistry and cultural pride, providing an enriching experience for those interested in local heritage.
The Unmissable Alishan Sunrise
The sunrise in Alishan is world-renowned, with visitors from near and far flocking to witness this awe-inspiring sight. It’s best to arrive at least an hour before sunrise to find a good spot at the observation deck and bring a warm jacket, as early mornings can be chilly. As the sky transitions from deep blue to a fiery orange, the sun gradually rises, casting a golden glow over the sea of clouds and mountains—a sight not to be missed. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture this fleeting moment, and plan your travel and accommodation early to make the most of this magical experience.
The best way to reach Alishan is via the historic Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi, where you can enjoy spectacular changes in scenery as the train climbs through different elevations. For a more flexible option, you can drive or take a public bus to the foot of Alishan and transfer to a shuttle for the final ascent. Either way, the journey to Alishan is as breathtaking as the destination itself.
