SAI WOO || Casual Asian Fusion with Inventive Flavours

Galbi Meatball Pasta and Chinatown Paella. Just the name alone makes us wonder what these interesting dishes would taste like.

Galbi means beef or pork rib in Korean cuisine, so seeing the Galbi Meatballs on the menu got our attention. We went further down the menu and came across Chinatown Paella — what would that taste like? Traditionally from Spain, the Spanish dish takes on a new twist at Sai Woo.

The waitress informed us that the restaurant had just launched a new menu as well, so of course, we wanted to try as many items as possible!

Beef Amuse Tartare

We ordered some small bites to share, such as the Shrimp Toast and the Beef, Tuna and Salmon Amuse Tartare. The Amuse Tartare are small bite-sized portions, so if you want to have enough to share make sure you order a few more!

The Shrimp Toast is made with milk bread and spicy XO aioli, but was a bit too oily for our taste, maybe because the soft milk bread soaked up a bit more of the oil than usual.

Chinatown Paella

We also ordered the Rack of Lamb, with Sai Woo spiced crust, carrot purée, sautéed mushroom and Asian greens, soy pickled serrano, nori butter, and herb oil. The portions are quite sizeable and can be shared if you decide to try more of the appetizers versus ordering two mains.

The Lamb is flavourful but not overpowering with the spiced crust, and the texture is easy to bite through and cooked to medium-rare. There was also an adequate mix of fat to make sure every bite is soft and delicious.

The Pandan Express

Of course, you should enjoy your meal with some of the tasty cocktails available from the bar. We had The Tropical Storm and the Pandan Express, although we had specially requested to have them made with rum. Tropical Storm has interesting flavors such as coconut cream and Thai chili in it, so make sure you can handle a spicy cocktail! The Pandan Express is a tasty tropical escape with pineapple bitters, pandan syrup, and lime oil.

Overall, we’re glad we made our way to Chinatown to visit the newly re-opened Sai Woo restaurant in Chinatown. Did you see any dishes you would want to try above?
