GÖSSERHALLE || From Brewery to Business: The Gösserhalle’s Architectural Revival in Vienna

New ideas are brewing.

In the heart of Favoriten, Vienna's 10th district, the Gösserhalle stands as a testament to architectural innovation and historical preservation. Originally constructed as a workshop for the ÖBB before 1900 and later transformed into a beer warehouse for the renowned Gösser company, this iconic building has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of its urban environment. Most recently, it served as an event venue, its distinctive clinker-clad arches defining the character of the neighbourhood. Today, the Gösserhalle embarks on a new chapter, seamlessly blending its storied past with contemporary design.

The revitalized Gösserhalle showcases its preserved brick façade and modern additions.

The project, led by AllesWirdGut Architektur, strikes a delicate balance between maintaining the historic façade and introducing a radical interior redesign. The original brick walls were preserved, paying homage to the building's industrial roots, while the existing roof was removed to make way for a modern three-story structure. This new addition, housing office spaces and a restaurant is enclosed by historical walling, creating a harmonious dialogue between old and new.

One of the most captivating aspects of this transformation is the innovative tension-loaded design, described as evoking the 'moment before a kiss.' This design philosophy is manifested in the three-meter interval between the original building depth and the new structure's skin. This luxurious space creates a sense of anticipation and surprise, inviting visitors to explore the interplay between past and present.

Sleek staircases and minimalist design elements characterize the Gösserhalle’s interior.

The use of prefabricated modular elements further underscores the project's commitment to sustainable and efficient construction practices. A mix of wood, clinker, and metal materials brings a tactile richness to the space, enhancing the building's aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The result is a sophisticated and inviting environment that respects the historical significance of the Gösserhalle while embracing the needs of its contemporary occupants.

Expansive windows, a triple-height central atrium with integrated greenery brings natural light and warmth to the contemporary space.

Inside, the Gösserhalle is a marvel of modern design. The three-story addition features open, airy spaces that encourage collaboration and creativity. The interiors are characterized by clean lines, minimalist furnishings, and an abundance of natural light. Vertical wooden slats and sleek metal accents create a dynamic visual rhythm, while the strategic placement of greenery adds a touch of tranquillity.

The transformation of the Gösserhalle is a remarkable example of how thoughtful design can breathe new life into historical structures. By preserving the building's iconic façade and introducing innovative interior elements, the project not only honours the past but also sets the stage for a vibrant future. The Gösserhalle now stands as a beacon of architectural excellence in Favoriten, offering a unique and inspiring space for its occupants.
