JUANA BAUTISTA || Timeless Sophistication at Tlaquepaque, Mexico

There is no better place to be for the classic yet contemporary boutique hotel, Juana Bautista, than at the epicentre of the artistic scene at Tlaquepaque, Mexico.

Inspired by eclectic Mexican traditions and a heavy Spanish influence, the Juana Bautista Hotel is a renovated, 16th-century estate that brings together art, colonial architecture, and contemporary design all under one roof. At Juana Bautista, guests are transported to a sanctuary where they can discover charming details from both the past and present.

A spacious patio near the hotel’s main entrance welcomes guests as they arrive. Here, guests can lounge under the shade of a 200-year-old-tree and relax to the soothing sounds of water flowing from a fountain brought from Paris in 1850. The 16th-century estate played an instrumental role in the design inspirations of the revamped hotel interior, paying homage to the era for which it was built.

Upon entry, guests are welcomed into a refined space with deep, rich colour tones and a mix of classical and contemporary elements. Every corner comes alive with meticulous, handcrafted details that showcase the skill and mastery of local artisans, such as the bespoke furniture, wood-carved artifacts, and blown-glass lamps.

Overnight guests can stay in one of the seven suites at Juana Bautista, each named after the titles of famous traditional Mexican songs, such as Amor Eterno, Las Mañanitas, Cielito Lindo, El Rey, Nube Viajera, Hermoso Cariño, and Motivos. To create a unique experience even for revisiting guests, each suite boasts a completely unique design, layout and furnishings. Upon close inspection, you will notice the incorporation of various textures and materials including the handcrafted textiles, leather, marble and tiles. Rich, warm wall colours evoke a luxurious feel while bringing together traditional decor and furnishings with contemporary elements. The result is an eclectic interior representing both past and present.

Juana Bautista, whom the hotel was named after, was a heroine from a well-known story passed down from the age of the Spanish Conquistadors. She was a beloved Queen of Cihualpilli Tzapotzinco of the Tonalá lordship, a city in the nearby region, and she was respected for her wit, charm and kindness to protect her people and land from feared conquerers. Her spirit and bravery set the foundation for the Kingdom of New Spain, and is an inspiration to many in the region. Inspired by her story and the era for which she ruled, the hotel’s design team created a concept in hospitality that pays homage to this well-respected Queen.

Black and white tiles in assorted traditional or contemporary patterns are featured in each guest room, drawing your eyes to the design details as you enter. Area mats, including traditional handwoven pieces and animal hides, are used to create a sense of comfort near the resting area. Contemporary artwork such as photography pieces can be found throughout the hotel, creating a ‘mini gallery’ for you to explore.

Finally, sun-loving guests can bask in the sun on the newly-renovated outdoor terrace with a swimming pool. The outdoor patio is also the perfect place to enjoy cocktail creations with family and friends, where there is plenty of room to accommodate larger parties.

The Juana Bautista Hotel is a wonderful example of hospitality that embraces not only the existing architectural context, but also the people, culture and art scene of the region. Visiting guests can expect not only a comfortable stay within its unique rooms, but also walk away with important cultural lessons and artistic inspirations that will make their experience one-of-a-kind.
